Lesson from the Past

Thursday, March 13, 2014

The baptistry had 3 youth in the morning and we had 2 youth at 4pm.  We were done at 5pm.
We had a charla with Aida and Miguel at 6:30 pm. Her visiting teacher was there.  She works at the temple on Fridays.  What a great sister to support this sister who does have some challenges.  We taught them how to pray correctly.  We gave them a daily prayer chart so that hopefully we can help them create a habit of daily and nightly prayer. We also gave them a calendar to mark the positive things they do each day with a + symbol.   It was a great visit and we have another one scheduled for next week.

I am so terrible at actually speaking Spanish.  I don’t know why it can’t translate from my head to my mouth correctly.  I brought them cookies and told them that my Spanish is not good, but hopefully my cookies are good.  I often feel like just giving up, but then I think of the people we are teaching and the principle being taught most often it is about not giving up. It is line upon line.  If you mess up, it’s okay as long as you keep trying and are progressing.  So I guess that needs to apply to me as well!  I am reminded of a picture I once gave to Justin…J  It’s hanging on my door now!

Good Talent Going Home

Wednesday, March 12, 2014

Today was Transfer Day and oro’s met their trainers.  We left the apartment @ 7:30 to fix breakfast for the missionaries.  We fed them fresh fruit salad and pancakes with ham. We left at 10:00 am for temple. There was no activity so we left the temple early to cook again for the missionaries going home. We have some great talent going home.
The cooking started at 4 pm and we were done by 10 pm.

Temple Parrots

Tuesday, March 11, 2014

Temple day and just as we figured, there were no baptisms at all today.  The youth are all back in school.  It did give us some time to study Spanish and attend one session with the new missionaries that came into our mission today.  I think there were about 8 sisters and 4 elders.
Walking for the bus, we found these cute parrots.  They are wild here.

They love the temple grounds. Who wouldn't?

Can you find the parrot?  His name is Waldo.

Came home and worked on contacting bishops to get the Open Houses set up on the calendar.

Homemade Brown Sugar

Monday March 10, 2014

P-Day. I baked all day, bread, sourdough bread, and oatmeal cookies.  I made my own brown sugar.  They have a brown sugar, but it is a bigger granule and not as moist.  No molasses exist here either.  So I experimented and put the brown sugar in the blender to make it finer.  I then added some maple syrup and stirred it into the sugar. It worked great!
Mike did the laundry which is an all day process when we have to use a clothes line.
We studied some Spanish and then walked ½ hour to our appointment with Pedro and his family.  We had an excellent visit with Ema, his wife.  She gave the closing prayer.  Pedro was still at work so it was a one on one lesson which I think went very well.  Camila was not there though.  We walked back home to get our sweet potatoes that I had baked for the salmon BBQ that Elder Pugmire arranged for the senior couples of both missions, including the mission presidents.  We walked back to the bus stop and said we would take whatever came first, a taxi or the bus.  The bus came first.  We spent a great evening with the best people in Uruguay.

¿Que Hora Es?

Sunday March 9, 2014
Had to get up early in order to be to church by 8:30am so that I could teach Sister Elisa Delgue how to play the organ. Mike set his iPhone alarm for 6:30 am.  His iPad was also set for 6:30 am.  So, his iPhone alarm wakes us up.  We get up, shower, dress, eat breakfast and as he says it is almost time to go, my mind is thinking, why is it still sort of dark outside if it is close to 8 am?  I check our wall clock and it is only 7 am!  We get to thinking that maybe the time had changed.
¿Que hora es?
We looked at our cell phones and the time had not changed.  So what time is it?  I am thinking we have to “spring ahead” but the traffic outside is telling other stories.  Then Mike’s iPad alarm set for 6:30 am goes off.  Crazy!  So here is what happened.  We actually “fall back” one hour and the U.S “springs ahead”.  So when Mike’s phone alarm went off, it is on U.S time which meant it got us up 2 hours earlier than necessary!  His iPad went off at the proper change of time for Uruguay.  So our time difference now is only 3 hours!  Can’t believe I missed out on 2 hours of extra sleep.  Our cell phones didn’t change time until later in the day.  Go figure.
My first organ student

I was able to spend some time teaching Sister Delgue and she did wonderful.  She even tried some of the bass pedals.  They now have an organist.  She asked me to play for Sacrament meeting though. She wanted to just listen. It was nice to play again.  Mike said that Bishop had told him that the organ hadn’t been played for 20 years!  The Stake President said that I had resurrected the organ.  They were both pleased and surprised when they came into the chapel with organ prelude music.
Camila was supposed to come after church to start learning piano.  She didn’t come though.  Maybe next week.  I gave the music to her step dad, just so that she knows I was prepared to help her.

This evening we had a car, so we drove to our 6pm appointment with Miguel and Aida. The address was wrong in the ward list, so we ended up driving way the wrong direction.  We eventually found them though.  We had a nice visit.  Mike gave her a priesthood blessing to help her with some addiction problems.  We have another charla set up with them on Thursday!

It was a good Sabbath day and to top it off, we got our very first letter from Raven today!

Skills Being Used

Friday, March 7, 2014
We had a busy day with cooking for our mission.  We were out the door by 7:15 am. Breakfast was served at 9:30 am. We cooked ham and French toast. We served orange juice and bananas.  At 1pm we served taco soup with corn bread.  I made the corn bread and I was quite worried that it had flopped.  The ovens and the ingredients here are so different to cook with.  Turned out fine though.  I think that’s because missionaries really will eat anything.

President Cook and his wife

After clean up, Mike went to the area office because they did receive our visa paperwork from Salt Lake. The office needed photocopies of our passports.  They now have to schedule a physical exam for us which is the next step towards our visa.
We figured out our phone problem.  The office forgot to record who had the phone.  Thinking it was a lost phone, they deleted it from the carrier Antel.  So, they gave Mike a new phone with a new phone #. He had to re enter all his phone contact information.  My pin # to activate my phone was written on the inside of the phone cover.  His iPad wasn’t working because he hadn’t put in the pin # they had asked him to enter.  He just ignored the message, not knowing what it was for.  Antel had never told him what that pin # was. Fortunately, he had brought his original paperwork with him to prove that this iPad was his so that they would give him the pin #.  So I think all our phones and iPad are now working again.

Saturday March 8, 2014
Feria in the morning.
Prepared lessons and visual aids for tonight.
Tried to get a taxi for our 2 pm appointment but after an hour and a no show taxi, we called back to reschedule for tomorrow at 6pm.
We were all prepared for our FHE at 6 pm but the only person that was home was Camila and her older sister whom we had not met previously.  We took the opportunity to get to know her a little better.  We also skyped with Kira so she could practice Spanish and have a new friend.  Camila tried a little English too.  Camila starts school on Monday. She goes to school from 7pm to 11pm.  Crazy!  She likes to do cleaning. Mike asked her if she could play an instrument.  She said no, but that she would like to play the piano. There we go!  So perfect.  I was trying to figure out a way to ask her if she wanted to learn the piano and here the opportunity fell right in my lap.  We decided to do it at the church, tomorrow after church at about 1 pm. At least doing this at the church, might help her feel the good Spirit vibes that are there. We left Camila after about an hour and searched out another sister. We only had to walk 3 blocks from our apartment. Seems we had a wrong address because no one knew her.
Mike calls her listed phone # and is leaving messages.

Came back to the apartment and stayed there the rest of the beautiful day.
Great day for sailing

or biking

or both sailing and biking

watching it all from the front of our apartment

including a kayaker

who almost caught up with the sailboat!

The 1940 Census Miracle

Wednesday March 5, 2014
Mike had yet another great reunion at the temple today.  Here are his comments.
Today in the temple, we were helping another group of youth in the baptistry when an elderly couple came in and asked to be able to do baptisms for some of their ancestors.  As the sister came out of the font, she looked at me closely and said, “I know you. Were you a missionary here before when you were younger?”  I confirmed that I was.  She asked if I had ever worked in Colonia Suisa.  I said I had worked in Colonia and that I was the district leader over Colonia Suisa.  She got very excited and talked about the knowing that I was the Branch President and how she remembered those times and the people that we both knew. She was still in wet clothes from the baptisms so I hurried her off to change with a quick hug. Later as I entered the office in the temple, I encountered her again.  This time she was even more animated.  She said, “You worked in the Deseret Ward in Montevideo”.  I confirmed that I had and she told me where she lived in Montevideo and reminded me that I often stopped by her house and had often eaten dinner there.  It was quite a little reunion and I will never cease to be amazed at how important missionaries are to the people they visit and teach.  They remember them and love them.  End of Mike’s comments.
When it was time for me to change clothes to go home, I had to go out to the foyer and tell Mike it might be a while because my locker was being used.  The sister in the locker was talking away, very excited as she relayed her findings of Elder Burnett to the other temple workers.  I have been made very aware of what a great impact my wonderful companion has had on so many people here in Uruguay.  He is my exemplar.
Thursday March 6, 2014

We had smaller groups at temple today but a strong confirmation from the Spirit on the marvelous blessing the Indexing program is for people.  Sister Zanni is a temple worker and she related the following story about finding her grandfather.
Sister Zanni, a marvelous, sweet, elderly sister that works diligently in the temple, quietly set 2 family cards on my desk as we were doing baptisms for, and in behalf of the dead, an ordinance performed anciently in the temples and also performed today.  When the time came to perform the baptism in behalf of this long lost great aunt, I turned around to make sure she was there to witness it.  She was and was obviously quite moved and very happy at seeing this done.  A short while later as it came time to do the work for the great uncle, I turned and saw that she had left to help someone.  I had them pause and Debbie went looking for her.  She returned shortly with Debbie and was obviously very grateful we had waited.
I spoke with her after we had finished for the afternoon and she explained that 25 years ago she had attended the temple in Chili, and while there the Spirit spoke to her and told her to look up and note how the temple ordinance worker looked exactly like her grandmother.  She looked up and it was so true.  She began to wonder why she had been reminded of her grandmother.  She realized that she had not done the baptism or other ordinance work for her ancestors.  That set her off on a 25 year search for her ancestors, most of which had come from Italy.  She spoke of how her mother had come to visit her and ended up passing away at her home and how hard it had been to take her mother back home to her sister in a coffin.  She lamented this and asked God why her mother had come to visit her only to die at her home.  Then she realized that her mother had spoken to her of where their family had come from in Italy.  That was her most valuable clue and led her to be able to find the records and do temple work for hundreds of her ancestors.  There was one great uncle however who had gone to New York and other than an Ellis Island report of his arrival, she was never able to find anything else about him.  Then, recently her granddaughter called her crying with joy because she had found the lost great uncle in the 1940 US census with his wife and child and other family members.  At that point I told Sister Zanni that Debbie had worked hard to get people involved in indexing that 1940 census and that she worked on it every day and even got me to help until it was all done.  At that point she again got tears in her eyes and said, “So, I was praying to be able to find my great uncle and Sister Burnett and others were working to answer my prayers. By that time we both had tears in our eyes.  I know how dedicated Debbie was to that project and to indexing in general for decades. End of Mike’s entry.
When Mike relayed this to me, my tears also came as another witness that FamilySearch Indexing has helped so many people and I am grateful to be a part of that.  I said to myself that who knows, but maybe our Stake did index Sister Zanni’s long lost uncle.

Our Mission President and his wife, President Cook met with us and the Pugmire’s this evening.  They came into the airport this morning but their luggage didn’t make it yet. After very brief introductions, we decide that our zone leaders who are coming in for Zone Conference tomorrow needed to be fed good meals.  We are back to cooking!  We dashed to the grocery store at about 8:30 pm and bought what we needed for tomorrow.  We told the Cook’s not to worry about anything.  We knew they were exhausted.  They were very appreciative.
We got home about 10 pm and had some homemade strawberry ice cream. The recipe was called “5 minute ice cream.” Just blend your cream, strawberries and sugar in a blender.  Put it in the freezer for a bit. It was very yummy.
