Seeing My First Rice Field

Saturday August 2, 2014
We once again drove the 5 hours to Melo.  It is always a beautiful country drive.

The ward was Castañet.  It rained two hours before the open chapel.  But, the sun came out and the weather was not cold.  The ward had many visitors because of the warm weather.  The ward members did a
wonderful job with their displays and fellowship.  There was one man who participated the whole evening and the elders are anxious to teach him more.

This is the stake center for Melo.  It is quite large.

Nice sunset to close a nice day.

Sunday August 3, 2014
We stayed the night in Melo and got up this morning to head to the Centenario Ward to do their capacitacion. It was Fast Sunday and I actually understood alot of their testimonies.  So, I guess I am making some headway with the Spanish language.  After the 3 hour block, we headed for Chuy.  The elders need a new apartment and tomorrow we hope to find one for them.

Our drive to Chuy gave us a whole new landscape to admire.

These palm trees were growing by the hundreds near the rice fields.

FRIO!

Saturday July 26, 2014
COLD, COLD, COLD.  We did a Capilla Abierta in la estaca de Treinta y Tres, barrios de Central y Plaza this afternoon and evening. The building had no heat because their tanks were out of propane.  The propane company was on strike, so the tanks could not be filled.  The temperature was probably close to 33 degrees.  Needless to say, the event was not well attended except by a few.  The active members always give their full participation though and the elders go out in this cold and try and bring people in.

The members participation was enthusiastic even though it was a very cold evening. The elders were tracking for the open house and invited a woman who owned a store down the street from the church. She accepted the invitation and closed her store. She also brought her family.  After the tour, she asked if she could be baptized!

Aren't they beautiful!  Just like my granddaughters.
This could be Kira, Cecily, Summer, Katrina
and Bethany in the not too distant future!

This little guy came in holding his invitation to the

We drove into Melo last night so that we could do a capacitacion for the Centenario Ward.  When we looked outside, there was "frost on the pumpkin"!  By the feel of things, it had to have gotten down to around 32 last night.  We arrived early at church and set up our projector, enjoyed priesthood and relief society with them and did our presentation during the Sunday School hour.  At the end of our presentation we were discussing the date for their capilla abierta and to our surprise and embarrasment found out that we were in the wrong ward!   We thought we were in Centenario only to find out we were in Colon.  No one ever said to us that they were surprised to see us or anything!  They told us that Centenario was down the street about 2 miles.  So, we had to call the bishop of Centenario and apologize.  The address we got from the mission office took us to Colon Ward.
So, next week we will do the capacitacion for Centenario and they will only have one week to prepare and Colon will have three weeks to prepare.
We were invited to lunch with the counselor in the bishopric, Hermano Fernandez.  What a great family!  They have 6 children!  That is so unusual for Uruguayans.  They are building a huge home by themselves and have been doing so for five years now. They wanted a place for all youth to come and enjoy the spirit that the gospel brings into family life.  With tears in my eyes, I thanked Hermana Fernandez for the great work she is doing with her large family.  They have no heat in their home yet and so we ate a meal of stuffed cheese raviolis as quickly as possible before they got cold.  You know it is cold when you can see your breath.  Yes, it was that cold inside their unfinished home.  We shared pictures of our family with them and pictures of snow and pictures of the greenhouse.  We enjoyed the spirit of love with this great family!

La familia Fernandez. Baby is missing because he was sleeping.
Only 1 girl and 5 boys. Gabriel at the far end is 17 and
preparing for a mission.

We stayed in Melo one more night so that Mike could work on installing a new water heater in the Elder's apartment and other fix up things.  But, while at the apartment...
I looked out the window and what did I see?
Popcorn popping on the (not sure what kind) tree!
I think la primavera is around the corner!!!
Hope so, cause this weekend was the coldest!
On our way home I couldn't believe that they actually teach people how to drive!
Could of fooled me!!!

We found out from the locals here, that having such cold weather was very unusual for Uruguay.

El día de los Pioneros

Tuesday July 22, 2014
Happy Birthday Mom!  She is 80 years young today.  Te amo mucho!

This week was busy for birthdays for people we are teaching and have become friends with.  There were four this week  and one more at the end of the month.  I have been taking homemade chocolate chip cookies and it is fun to watch them try a first bite and then eat the whole plate.  They don't make homemade goodies down here.  Mike and I also sing Happy Birthday to them in English of course!

El Día de los Pioneros!
I wore a hat today to the office just to remind everyone it was Pioneer Day. Hermana Schaelling and Hermana Ots really dressed up!  These sisters are so fun.

I also had time to video our new apartment.

I was Grandma for 2 hours!

We did our first Friday Capilla Abierta in San Ramon.  I think this particular Friday worked because it was a holiday of some sort and more people were out doing things. The drive was not too long, about 1.5 hours.

COMENTARIOS: Esta barrio recibe el primer premio por ser los más preparados. Sus stands estaban listas, el edificio muy limpio, y todos los miembros activos estuvieron presentes. Fue una noche maravillosa para todos.
This ward receives first prize for being the most prepared. Their rooms were ready, the building very clean, and all active members were in attendance.  It was a wonderful evening for all.

It was a special evening for me. I held her for 2 hours!  Her name is Genesis.
She was five weeks old.

I had to share Genesis with this cute little friend. She stayed
by my side waiting for Genesis to wake up so she could
hold her with Mom's permission of course.

Mommy was quite happy to share Genesis with me.
Mike's IPad doing it's magic for the kids of all ages.

Can you guess how old the girl on the left might be?
Answer can be found at the bottom of this post.

Most of the San Ramon Ward

The girl is actually in Young Women's and is 14 years old!

Semana de Cambio always means "happy tired feet"

Wednesday - Tuesday July 9 - 15, 2014

Remembering July 09, 2010 and the blessing our family received from Heavenly Father in helping Dallin recover from his severe head injury from rope swinging into a tree at Fathers and Sons Outing 4 years ago.

Fixing hermanas house. I brought Amish Apple Cake for them

I finally found some real cheddar cheese at Geant!
Spent 4 hours this evening (July 11th) waiting for one hernana
to be treated for severe, infected blisters on her feet.
I think we will be seeing more of this place now that
the Pugmire's have left.
My first and last attempt at empanadas.
They were good, but took more time than I have.
Premade flour tortillas work fine and taste about the same
without all the hassle.

Our granddaughter, Kammi Nicole was baptized today.  We enjoyed facetime with her before her baptism to congratulate her for her commitment to follow Jesus.

We traveled to San Ramon early this morning to do a capacitacion for them.  It was a lovely drive.  The ward was very small, but the spirit strong.

Hoy was Feliz Dia del Padre

The final google clips from Mundial.
Our weekends are back to the Capilla Abiertas!
Tuesday and Wednesday, July 15 y 16
Cambio or change week is always very busy.  I help in the kitchen both days.  On my feet standing on the hard tile kitchen floor is hard on my poor feet.  Maybe I can find a nice foot mat somewhere is absorb some of the hard tile. Mike always goes to the airport to help pick up the new missionaries coming in.  We feed them breakfast and lunch.  We cook in the mission home and then walk it over to the Carrasco chapel which is right next door.  It is always great to be among the youth of the church.
Wednesday all the buses come in to the Malvin chapel and all the transfers happen from there.  Fortunately, they always order pizza for lunch.  So Wednesday breakfast we cook for the new missionaries and their trainers.  In the afternoon we start cooking for the special Valientes dinner that is held in the mission home.
Mike couldn't help because he had to do some more hospital runs.

Our wonderful cook, Mary

Hermana Cook tries very hard to get some of the
US "picky" eaters to eat some kind of fruit or
vegetable.  She of course bribes them. "If you don't
eat a fruit or vegetable, you don't get dessert!"
It works.

Hermana Zegarra is the only sister heading home tomorrow.
She is a favorite.  We love her and wish her all the best!

These are the valientes headed for home tomorrow
