Our Boards...places for messages and art

Monday, April 28, 2014

P-Day.  The sisters came over to use our computers, so of course I fed them.  This is the message they left on our board:
Tuesday, April 29, 2014
Spent the day at the mission home to help cook and feed the missionaries. The zone leaders came in for their monthly “concilio” which is “council meeting”.  I fixed the cole slaw.  HUGE bowl was devoured.  It is a pretty good slaw with apples, carrots, green onions and red bell peppers.  I used the same dressing I use for the broccoli salad.

Salad Master in Uruguay Mission Home!

Fortunately, the mission home has an ancient “salad master” grater so it made cutting the cabbage so much faster.  It was so old it had no grip left to make it stable so I held the grater in place and Mike did the grating.  He did 5 big cabbages!

Rainy day!  We were going to go tour up the coast with the Harris’ but we canceled because of rain.
I send out alot of emails today which is all part of our capilla abiertas.  Some are getting paperwork that we send out before the capacitacíons, others are getting paperwork before their capilla abierta and still others are getting a thank you for doing the capillia abierta.  One last email goes out about 3 weeks after the capilla abierta to ask about baptisms because of the capillia abierta.  When we are in full swing, it is a lot to keep track of.
I also went over to Sister Harris’ to help her work on a new mission cookbook.
We were able to get back to the mission office today to begin to help take care of office finances. This is what we found on our board at the office:

I think they were using our office for a lunch room while Mike was sick and we were unable to go to the office.

Capilla Abierta Barrio de Camino Carrasco

Camino Carrasco Capilla Abierta
All the active members were there in full force. Probably about 30 of them.
It was pretty busy for about 2 hours.  Most of the people that came were from
passerbys that the elders or hermanas bring in from the street.  But there was one great couple that came in because of the invitation that was left on their door.  They mentioned that they walk by the church quite often and always wanted to come and see.  So, with the invitation, they got all dressed up and came.  They loved it stayed the whole time.  I would be surprised if they did not become members.
Here are the stats:

VISITANTES         #                  REFERENCIAS    #   42
# de misioneros      12
# de miembros        26
# de no-miembros   14

We did a capacitacíon for Las Piedras 1 and 2. It is about a 45 minute drive. These two wards meet on top of each other. We did one presentation at 10 am and the other at 11 am.  That helped us get home a lot earlier than expected.  After being sick all week, we were concerned that Mike’s voice would give out, but he did great as always.

We have bookings into August!

P-Day!  Mike is very sick.  No shopping today.

Tuesday, April 22, 2014
It is getting colder.  We turn the heater on in our bedroom now just before bedtime.  Mike is a tiny bit better.  I studied Spanish.  Still not sure if I will ever be as good as people expect me to be.  It is pretty hard for me.

Mike is much better, so we ventured out to the office and discovered 3 huge buses there and 4 vans.  We witnessed our first Cambios. This is the day of the changes for companionships and areas. There was lots of energy there and plenty of suitcases, trash bags turned into wanna be suitcases, and taped up boxes.
We did a 2 hour charla with Aida and Miguel. She has been watching conference on the DVD’s I burned and gave to her and she is reading a Liahona that we gave her.  She was full of great questions that she had written down.
Sister Berrios has been changed to Melo which is about 6 hours away.  It is sad to see her go but she is training a new oro from Canada and will be a great teacher.

Sister Zegarra has a new companion and her name is Hermana Schaelling.

Prayers are on overtime for Takoda.  Kammi just told me he has a new tumor in his right eyelid. Surgeon will see him in June. That seems like a long time away. It is called Plexiform Neurofibroma.

We are booked for open houses until August.  The other mission has no other couple to do the open houses so the van is ours.  Every weekend is now full until August.

Friday, April 25, 2014
We are getting ready for our big weekend.  I had to change shopping around from Saturdays to Fridays.

I baked bread and I believe the Elders were driving by and smelled the bread baking, because all 4 of them showed up on our doorstep right after the bread was done baking!  They have never done that before.  So out of the 3 loaves, I have 1 left.

Our flyers were delivered late this afternoon.  Thank you Myron for the new design. Everyone loves it!

We had a great charla with Yisel.  I tried to tell her in Spanish it was good to see her at church on Sunday, but I failed.  Mike had to help.  I don’t know why it gets so jumbled up between my brain and my mouth.

Easter Sunday - Felices Pasquas

Saturday, April 19, 2014
We were at the temple by 7:30 am. It was very busy until 4 pm.  As we were walkiing out to our van I saw a baby in the parking lot and started to cry. I miss being able to hold my babies, or give any of my family hugs and smiles. Poor Mike. He never knows when these waterworks are coming.  I don't know either.  It just happens.

We did facetime with the family because everyone was at Kammi’s for the big easter egg hunt. I appreciate so much our technology. Everyone looked great.  It seems that our prayers for them are being answered.

We were able to attend our own Malvin ward today, because we did not schedule any orientations for Easter. Yisel was there! We start with Relief Society and it wasn't until I sat down way across the room from her, that I saw her. By then, there were no seats available next to her. I did nod a "hi" and she smiled and nodded back.  She was given a warm welcome and those that knew her came up to her after Relief Society and gave her hugs. Relief Society gave everyone a cute little handmade easter decoration.

We attended the gospel essentials class with her.  The sister that teaches that class is excellent.

We had to leave her though because we promised Aida and Miguel that we would attend Sacrament meeting in Camino Carrasco for Felices Pasquas with them. I told the relief society president to make sure she had someone sitting next to her during sacrament meeting.

We went to Camino Carrasco ward but Aida couldn’t come because she couldn’t walk that far.  She has bad knees and she had no money for a taxi.  Miguel was there though. He had a big smile on his face when we came and sat next to him. Church was out about 12:30 pm.

We came home to bake sourdough bread and then had an Easter dinner with Giles, Harris’, Office Elders and Sisters. We had a great meal of "wanna be ham" but it was the best anyone could do.  We had great potatoes, salad, jello salad, asparagus, bread, and brownies with ice cream.

This was a big chocolate football

We then had a charla at 3 pm with the Lopezs. We shared some of our easter goodies and Celeste's ring pops with the family. Mike mentioned to Ema that I was missing home a bit because of the Easter holiday and that's all it took for the water works to start again. Ema put her arms around me and spoke kind words to me of which none of them I understand but I did feel her love and compassion which was better that words.

I had a first today. Can you guess?

P-Day.  Slept innnnn…..

Tuesday, April 15, 2014
I had a first today.  Can you guess?
This was the first time in 40 years that I was not doing IRS taxes on this day!

The mosquitos are thick today. I am not sure why.

We worked in the temple with the youth doing baptisms. It was a very busy day.
The country is on "easter break" but they have changed the terminology to "semana de turismo". Because of that, there is no school this week, so bus loads of wards from the interior are coming to the temple.

I was so involved with trying to get dinner ready tonight after our busy day, that I had forgot the YW New Beginnings practice.  Fortunately, because the spirit couldn't whipser to me because I was so busy, it whispered to Mike and he remembered.  We ate a very late dinner.  Young Women's doesn't even start until 8:30 pm.

Temple again.  Not too busy.
There are still lots of mosquitos.  They love Mike. He has bites all over his legs.
We literally run to our van with our heads covered.
I shared this statement with the sisters today and they enjoyed it.  I think they enjoy my spanish too.
Tengo que amor por Uruguay, pero no tengo amor por los mosquitos.

Miguel
Tonight we helped Miguel and Aida put their parents names into FamilySearch.  Aida is very excited to do this.  She has her tree all ready drawn out on a piece of paper.

12 hour temple day.  BIG groups all day. Need I say more?  Nope.

Friday, April 18, 2014

Not such a busy day for me because they had plenty of help.
Tonight we had a charla with Yisel that I prepared. We invited her to come to church for Easter Sunday.
