MTC Day Four

TRC Training = Torture Retired Couples

Follow Up Day

Today we role played with doing a follow up appointment with someone who had made a commitment of some sort.  This TRC training, Training Resource Center, is great because we have the opportunity to share our testimony often when doing all this role play.
Another definition of TRC is Torture Retired Couples.

Scripture today: Mosiah 23:10

Quote:  The fastest way to get to the Garden of Gethsemane is through the Sacred Grove.

We had dinner with Ed and Lynn Allison tonight.  They were unable to travel to our farewell and they wanted to see us before we left.  MTC food is not that great so eating with them was a nice change.  Lynn asked me after dinner if I had time to help her with some family history.  BIG GRIN!  Of course and so Mike and Ed visited in one room and Lynn and I did Family Tree Intro for 2 hours.  It was great and she had some names ready for the temple.  I really miss teaching, so this was great for me and her tonight!

Elder Burnett finally does the technology thing

My missionary companion seems to think that blogging isn't just for the Senior companion (her).  So I got assigned to say something also.. Hi all !
Seriously, I am so impressed by all of the support.  We love you all.  What wonderful friends and family.  So far that is what stands out most in my mind about out new little adventure. I have been amazed at all the well wishes, love and support from family, friends and people we were sure had forgotten the days when we shared adventures with them.  We have treasured each adventure with each of you!!

MTC Day Three

New young elders and sister arrived today at the MTC.  It was great to just feel the buzz of excitement and energy that these wonderful people have.

In our training today, we worked with "investigators".  It was a great exercise in that we could observe each other as we tried to present as a team and of course with the interaction of people we just met.   All of what we are learning is simply to give us help on how to help others come unto Christ.  Mike is used to teaching a Gospel Doctrine class, so he needs to reduce and simplify.  I am quite comfortable in letting him take the lead and say nothing, but he feels that my input is needed and valuable.
This morning was:
What principle or concept is being taught?
Why is it relevant?
Ask questions to assess understanding.
What do you feel?
Make a commitment.

This afternoon was How to Follow Up with Investigators Commitment
We have a great district. All power houses.  We were able to share our testimony with each other about the plan of salvation and give each other suggestions on others ways to present and say things.  The synergy was just awesome.

Sister Carlston ended up sick today, so we had to postpone our Family History lesson for another evening.  Mike and I are spending some (very) quiet time studying together.  Haven't had time for the Espanol yet.

Scripture of the day: D&C 50:13-18
Thought of the day:  I don't care how much you know, until I know how much you care.

MTC Day Two

Apostle David A Bednar came tonight as the devotional speaker!  They say that an apostle doesn't come very often.  What a special privilege and blessing to be instructed at the feet of an apostle of the Jesus Christ. His apostilic blessing:  Learn to wait upon the Lord.  Be patient and when you do you will see the tender mercies in every day life.

Mike got the flu bug early this morning that put him out until about 1 pm.  He did come and participate in our afternoon classes.  He should sleep good tonight since he is feeling much better.

Classes were scheduled around our purpose as missionaries and how to help people come unto Jesus Christ.  We were taught in small groups by the young returned missionaries.  It was great to interact with them and their enthusiasm.  They enjoyed sharing and we lend our life experiences. The blend works really great.  One of our afternoon trainers proudly announced that he has a ring on order for his hopeful bride to be.  He has already talked to her father, so the next big step is to pop the question.  So FUN!  We did a lot of role playing and will do some more tomorrow.  I think it helps to say things out loud because even though you think you know it in your head, it sometimes comes out different with the mouth.  Of course, Mike is loving this part and keeps the other couples on their toes by asking the questions he always likes to ask. He plays the part of an investigator very well.

Scripture for today: D&C 43:15-16
Quote for the day:  Elder Bednar made this comparison:

Priesthood is not male. It is power and authority to act and given by God.
It is like an umbrella.  People are able to gather under the umbrella for protection. Someone has to hold the umbrella and the brethren are the ones asked by God to do so.

MTC Day One

We are official!

Badges are in English, so we ordered Spanish ones.
Reported to the MTC at 10 am.

Most of the day was spent in an orientation type day.  There are about 40 couples and we meet in a ward building that sits behind the main MTC building.  There are lots of perks to being a "senior couple".  We can cut in line at the cafeteria.  Padded, upfront seats for the devotionals!  Lots of references to being senior such as: No heart attacks allowed, distilled water for C-Pap machines available, take a nap whenever, refrigerators for medications, get some exercise.

There are quite a few medical people going out from our group. We are all spread out all over the world.
The scripture of the day was: Matthew 19:29.
Quote of day: How can we do this?  One prayer at a time.

We are staying in BYU Housing.  Our little apartment is bigger than what we have at home. :)
It seems we have come full circle.  Started in a little apartment here in Provo with just the 2 of us and now we are back.  Seldom in our married life have we ever lived by ourselves!

The Best Feelings Are Those That Have No Words to Describe Them

These last two days have been packed full!  Friends and family all week-end.
Justin and Kammi so willingly donated their home and food for all the guests.
Tara and Myron provided the teen and children entertainment at their home.
It all started at 6:30 pm on Saturday.  Kammi made 14 homemade pizzas and then of course, dear friends from the ward brought salads and desserts!  So many came from near and far that I wouldn't be able to name everyone!  Some could come Saturday and others came on Sunday for our talks in Sacrament meeting.  The tears of course came as I hugged my dear friends.

Our houses were packed for the night as Briana flew in, Mom was here, and Chris and Candiss did not want to drive home and then back again for 9 am church.  All couches and beds and floors were used.  The biggest task was getting everyone ready by 8:45 am.  But we did it!
The front of the chapel was filled with family and friends.  The rest of the ward had to sit in the back.

Justin blessed their daughter, Aundrea Clair Burnett. What a special day!  She slept through the whole thing.

The grandkids (27 that could sing, 3 babies not included) sang the Armies of Helaman. Kira played thecello and Ashlen played the violin.  Kammi played the piano.  What a special memory.

I gave my talk without too much blubbering.  I felt the Spirit was there and that the message that I felt prompted to give was received with that same Spirit. The talk has been dubbed: 3 Little Pigs Doctrine. Well, what do you expect from someone who has been teaching those wonderful pre-school children?
I had one sister email me and state that she had witnessed a miracle today because her teenagers were actually listening to my talk!  That made smile.

Mike also gave a great talk about a "higher law". Living the Ten Commandents is good but it is a terrestrial law. Keep your hands to yourself type of living.  Jesus came to his disciples who were living this law and asked them to follow Him and they learned a higher law.  A celestial way of living.  Love and serve.  Instead of keeping hands to self,  lend your hands to others with no strings attached. I can't give his talk justice, but that is what I gleaned from it.

After our talks, Bishop Walter gave us his blessing as follows:
You'll be safe and protected, be a light and a beacon, share hope and love, be able to teach the people about His great atoning sacrifice.

After the 3 hour church meetings, everyone that could went back to our homes and we had BBQ meat of all varieties. We went through 40 lbs of meat!  One of our friends cooked a deep fried turkey.  It was all yummy and houses were packed again.  Friends and family that needed to travel left about 2:30 including Mom.  THAT WAS THE HARDEST!

At 5pm, the Stake Presidency came to Justin's home.  We were all in the basement and they were amazed at the size of our group!  Thought we had another ward meeting going on. He wanted to take a picture he was so impressed  Pres Miles said he had never been to a home with so many family members present. Pres Miles was voice and Pres Schmidt and Pres Funk all participated in setting us apart as full time missionaries. Now we are truly eternal companions: 24/7!

Packing our bags was next on the agenda.

We will be in the Provo MTC for 2 weeks and will come home on the weekends.  So we only had to pack 1 small suitcase each.  The big packing will take place the 2nd weekend we are home.

Days now over and even with all the above words, I still cannot capture the feelings of today.  My heart is full of gratitude for all my blessings, for all my friends, for all my family.
So, off to bed.

Report to the MTC tomorrow morning at 10 am headed for a new life of full time missionary service.

A Father's Blessing

Last night we had the special and sacred opportunity to receive a father's priesthood blessing from Mike's 87 year old father.  I feel so blessed to be able to have this extra boost of assurances as we leave our family and venture forth into the mission field. My mom was able to be there with us.  We brought her up with us from Santa Clara after we visited with her for a few days so she could enjoy the weekend activities planned for us by our children.

Not much left on our pecking list.  :)
